One of the odder things I did on vacation was order a replacement for my primary home computer. Apple (finally!) updated the whole PowerBook G4 line, and solved 2 of my 3 concerns with the 12" model: They updated it to USB 2.0 (a minor element), and updated the video-out port to support Apple's own display standards. They still didn't put in an L3 cache, but that's survivable. (They also didn't put the nifty illuminated keyboard on the low-end 12" model. Note the lack of disappointment on my part.) So, on Wednesday evening, I dropped a couple thou at the Apple Store online. As much as I wanted this machine, I stared at the final "Check Out" button for a very long time. What was especially scary was how quickly they approved my loan (same-as-cash for 6 months — who could resist?), for nearly twice the amount I requested.
Yesterday, the boxes started arriving. First in was my promotionally-priced copy of Final Cut Express (a pricing deal that expired on September 20, hence why I ordered while still on the road), shipped from Tennessee. This morning, the AirPort Extreme Base Station is on a FedEx truck somewhere in Orlando, waiting to be delivered from California. Both were shipped the same day, September 18. Unfortunately, the PowerBook is still scheduled to ship "on or before" September 29. So, for a couple of weeks, I will have a lovely, white, UFO-shaped paperweight in my home office.
