"Everything Happens For A Reason"

Ever have someone spout that line to you? Usually it's when something cosmically puzzling occurs, and people want you to feel comfortable about it. There's just some grand master plan dictating our every move and action, so don't worry, be happy.

Everything for a reason, huh? Let's try this one out, then. When I was on vacation, I decided to visit the Metropolitan Community Church (my current denomination) in Portland. Nice enough place, friendly people (although they did the dreaded "public recognition of visitors" trick). At the home church here, we encourage silence during Communion; Portland provides a litany of simple songs to be sung instead. Either has the same effect — reduce the potential for chattiness during a meditative moment.

One of the songs was "Sing Hallelujah To the Lord" (or some such name), a pensive, minor-key melody that has always been one of my all-time favorites. It's a campfire kind of song — or so I perceive it, because I learned the song and sang it very summer at the church camp of my youth — located less than an hour from the church where I found myself singing it again, possibly 15 years later.

Favorite religious song, merely miles from favorite place, in a distant outpost of my new denomination. Stunningly beautiful weather. Would the "reason" for all this be that I should pick up and move to Portland?

Just pondering.
