Oh Say, Can You Tree?

Last week, I noticed a trend that has grown in the past two years — and it's a trend I'm not fond of: patriotic Christmas trees. There is one outside the front doors of my gym, bedecked in US flags and red-white-blue ribbons.

We have plenty of patriotic holidays: clearly, Independence Day; but also Labor Day and Memorial Day have become so, and there's always Flag Day, Presidents Day, and "Patriot Day." To me, Christmas is about peace and unity — and by "unity" I don't mean "United We Stand" rhetoric.

Don't get me wrong, patriotism has its time and place. But if you're going to put up a Christmas tree, hold off on the Red, White, and Blue, and go to town with the Red, Green, and Gold.
