Cynical View Alert

So I learned late on Saturday (by news updates on my pager, which I did bring along for the Weekend) about Reagan's death. By the time we got ready to go out for the evening, the news was nothing but warm fuzzy retrospectives.

Now, I'll admit, I was 9 when he was elected, and 17 when he was replaced (OK, nearly half my life ago now), so I may not have perfect memory. But I don't recall the press being all that glowing about Reagan during his lifetime. He was the President — not a King — and while he was charismatic and definitely influenced history more than many other recent Presidents, I don't think he was publicly adored to the level he has been the past few days.

I think some platitudes are at work here: Don't speak ill of the dead; if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all; and time heals all wounds. Since the Major Media have to say something, might as well be nice.
