Triple Threat

When I am asked about my job — internal communication — I have found it generally easiest to explain thusly: if you don't work for my company, you shouldn't ever see or hear anything I've written, or something has gone terribly wrong.

Most people presume I'm talking about information leaks. I was thinking more about events like the storms this year. It says something to me about the significance of this weekend's storm that I've seen or heard my work go outside our walls three times in as many days:

1. On Sunday evening, I heard a company spokesperson being interviewed on TV, who read a line I had written Friday about people returning to work.
2. Yesterday morning, our corporate internal web site, based out-of-state, had an article quoting our site's president. The quote was part of a sentence I had team-written. (Yes, he saw and approved it before it went out.)
3. I wrote and recorded announcements for three different phone numbers: one for employees here, one for employees at another site, and one for the public. My words, my voice, out there for everyone to hear. (I feel bad for them.)

I really hope those voicemail lines get taken offline soon, now that we're somewhere past the Storm Recovery Phase. Some things I'd rather not save for posterity.
