10-Year Tenure

There's something about the 10-year mark that gives me pause (as evidenced here and here). Yesterday, I passed another of those milestones: I've lived in Central Florida for ten years. This is actually a year longer than my second stint in my home state of Oregon. (In fact, now that we've been in the house known as Chez Dan for just over four years, I think it's the longest I've lived at any one address since the house where I grew up.)

When I first moved here, the draw of working for my company, combined with the very powerful urge never to drive cross-country again, kept me here. There was a time when having eight theme parks within a one-hour drive, and thus never a lack of things to do, was a great reason to stay. Honestly, none of these have the power they used to (especially not when compared against the recent weather-related unpleasantness). Now, I think I'm here by a small amount of simple intertia — and a whole lot of connection to friends I've made. Sure, I still daydream (heavily!) about returning to the mountains — or at least, to being within view of them — but after ten years of building this family, I don't really think I could live anywhere else.

  1. Let's hear it for inertia! And the tons of vacation time that comes with it. Dewayne (now in year 16 of not moving away).

  2. I wasn't born in Florida but grew up here (parents moved here when I was three months old). I did a stint out in Vegas for 2.5 years but was glad to return home to my family and friends. I can't imagine moving away again unless I had to enter the Witness Relocation Program. Home is where you feel comfortable and it looks like you've found yours. :)

  3. You sound quite happy in FL and that life is treating you well. Nothing wrong with that! Just remember, Oregon will always be here....waiting. ;)

  4. I know my life would not be the same if you had not been in it. I am so glad that you are here and I certainly concider you part of my small (but ever growing)family! I know life can take strange turns now and then, but I certainly hope our paths continue to go in the same direction. Thanks for being such a good friend! I know I stay here for many different reasons... my life is here... and I would hate to lose you and all those that make it worth while living. Here is to another 10 years!
