Thoughts From Today's Commute

Florida is one of those states with the "Speeding Fines Double In Construction Zones When Workers Are Present" signs. (They used to not restrict it to "when workers are present," but I think lawmakers caught on that so-called construction zones seemed to be popping up for the purpose of creating revenue-enhanced speed traps.) I'm fine with this concept — no reason to put construction workers in any more danger than necessary. (The Florida Turnpike even has a set of Burma Shave-esque signs that highlights the number of annual construction-worker fatalities, in hopes of guilting drivers into slowing down.)

Turnabout is fair play, though, so I'd like to propose a companion law. Construction-related vehicles should be subject to doubled fines for speeding when they are in non-construction zones. A loaded dumptruck can easily do twice the damage of a normal vehicle when, say, it is driving at least 20 miles over the speed limit and using merge-lanes to pass on the right.

I'm just sayin'.
