I thought, eventually, the Schiavo stuff would go away. Unfortunately, this is Florida, so it looks now like we'll be hearing about it through the next election, at least.
So, I feel compelled to finally post what I've been thinking about all this. I wish there was a way to put a dollar value against the time spent by courts, lawyers, judges, Congress and the President; add to that the money spent on the legal process, and on the President being flown back for his dramatic bill-signing. Then factor in the time and money spent by all the protesters onsite, and all the radio hosts who spoke endlessly about the situation.
I'd almost be willing to bet that the final dollar tally would make anyone who provides life-sustaining services to the poor (or other generally disadvantaged group) absolutely drool. If everyone who was involved in the fight would donate an equivalent amount of money to charity — since life and preservation thereof is so important — I bet we could make a big dent in hunger and preserve life for thousands, not just one person.
(I had partly thought the same for all the money spent on PopeWatch as of late, but I'll let that one slide.)
Speaking of the Pope, I've been entertained watching people fall over themselves to get it wrong. If we presume that the Pope is divinely inspired in his speech, and if we presume the selection of the next pontiff is also divinely inspired... why would we presume that there might be a significant change in the direction of the Catholic Church with the change in the Pope? Wouldn't that contradict the concept or divine inspiration.
