I grew up in a state with no sales tax. I don't know about those of you who grew up elsewhere, but I was used to things costing even-dollar amounts. When I moved to Florida, I found myself awash in coins. I would get them back as change, and drop them in a bag/bowl/whatever at the house. That all adds up quickly to a lot of "lost" money. Since my bank didn't offer a coin-counting service, I used to roll coins and deposit them that way.
I'd tried those Coinstar machines once or twice, but they keep something like 9¢ on the dollar as a service charge. Until now. They've set it up where the machine prints electronic gift certificates. Though the website advertises Starbucks cards, my local machine didn't offer that — fine by me, actually. I went for the iTunes option. So now I'm loose-change free, but it's like I'm having Free Music Saturday here.
It is not nearly as much fun, but my Publix will give you a receipt for exact amount you can use in the store for groceries - not as cool as free music, but helpful when you are out of TP 2 days before payday!
ReplyDeleteI always use my coins. I specifically never used those machines because of the "sur-charge".
