Of Ghosts and Glory

As you may know, I sing with the Orlando Gay Chorus. I don't usually push our concerts here, but we're working on something really special for this upcoming weekend, and I'd be remiss not to say something about it.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida (in Maitland, associated with the Jewish Community Center) is currently hosting a touring exhibit put on by the National Holocaust Museum, discussing the persecution of gays and lesbians in the 30s and 40s. In collaboration with the Center, we are putting on a special show entitled "Of Ghosts & Glory," featuring music in the spirit of pre-Nazi Germany cabaret and songs of tolerance from today.

We have about 50 performers this show, including a handful of solos and a small 15-person ensemble (of which I am one — you can come watch my attempts at simultaneous choreography and singing). We did a full-show run-through last night — and I believe it to be one of the most well-put-together, thought-provoking events of which I've ever been a part. I use "don't miss it" writing in most of the Chorus' press materials. This time, it truly isn't marketing-speak — this show is worth experiencing.

The show should run just over an hour, and the adjacent exhibit is said to take roughly an hour to view. Our shows are at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 19; the exhibit will be open noon-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are online at www.orlandogaychorus.org, or can be purchased at the door.
