Hold the Phone
I have, within the last month, become part of the cellular phone crowd. One place you will not reach me, however, is the gym — partly because I don't want to carry the phone around when I'm there, and partly because I consider it one of my you-can't-reach-me-now respites. It is not uncommon, however, to see others chatting away whilst walking their 3.2 miles. (I think one guy has an MP3 player in his.)
What I find odd — and perhaps somehow disturbing — is how an adjacent phone call messes with my heart rate monitor. I don't think the call is really messing with my heart rate that much, but it took a moment of puzzlement to figure out why I suddenly had a heart rate of 205 beats/min. So which should disturb me more: a) that a cell phone creates that particular frequency of interference, or, b) that my heart rate monitor holds that frequency so close to my person?
