Christmas Story Pondering
Thought from while in church yesterday: In all my years of hearing elements of the traditional Christmas Story explored and dissected, I've often heard that the famed gifts-of-the-magi (gold, frankincense, and myrrh) were somehow related to kingship and, even more specifically, the burial of said king. This is always touted as some sort of prescience or foreshadowing of Jesus' life. (Sorry, I can't seem to find corroborating Web articles right now.)
What I don't recall hearing, though, is any sort of connection between the manger — a trough used to feed animals — and the Catholic belief of Eucharistic transubstantiation. My guess is I've just never encountered it anywhere yet — it's probably out there. But still.
