My church, Joy MCC, has an entire hymnal of gender-neutered songs. God is God, not He or Him. Most of the year, it's not too distracting, but for someone whose high school Christmases were spent caroling as fundraisers for the school choir, the traditional verses are pretty well ingrained in my head. Usually, I can adapt, but some are just too far out there. For example:
O come, o come, Emmanuel.Um, I'm reasonably sure we were reasonably sure Jesus was male.
And ransom captive Israel.
Who mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the child of God appear.
Of course, this past Sunday, we sang the modified "Joy to the World," which proved that gender-neutral terminology is for everyone:
Joy to the world, the Lord is come.
Let Earth receive its King.
