Cookie Momster

One other thing I noticed on Saturday's shopping spree: Girl Scout Cookies. I was rather surprised to see a very professional-looking sales display at the outlet mall, just outside the food court. They had the boxes arranged on risers, and in baskets, on a table draped with a white tablecloth. They'd even done the presentation step of placing risers under the tablecloth.

Only one thing was missing: the Girl Scouts. Two adult women (I could presume and call them "moms"), but no children in green uniforms. No children in sight, period.

I could give them the benefit of the doubt and say they might have sent the kids on a break. But it just heightens my suspicion of the whole deal. Sure, the program is meant to "build character" and raise funds for educational events and outings. It's just convenient that the sales happen in that magic window around Valentine's Day and the annual collapse of diet-oriented New Year's resolutions. And even I find myself hard-pressed to resist the call of the Thin Mint (among others). But I would have to say that probably less than 25% of the time I have been solicited for cookie-buying, the solicitor has been an age-appropriate member of Scouting. Maybe it's really more about giving Mom a chance to express her entrepreneurial spirit while assuaging her guilt over not spending enough time with Daughter?
