Kevin Costner Had It Right

Although I heard The Postman wasn't that great of a film, the basic premise may not be too far off. One of the ways we knew normalcy was returning to life was the delivery of mail on Monday. (In the harder-hit areas of southwest Florida, mail carriers brought water and ice on Monday instead of mail.)

As of this morning, we no longer have to boil our drinking water. Now, it's almost more about a survivor's guilt. We've made some offers of assistance (in the air-conditioned sleeping environment and hot shower capacity) but these have not yet been heeded, mainly because we are so far from town. The gas shortage is easing up, though, so the distance is becoming less of a barrier. We are in big trouble if everyone changes their minds all at once.<grin>

Grocery shopping yesterday was an adventure, as people do regain power and have to replace all the wasted perishable food. I kept my shopping under the 10-item Express Lane limit.

Today's surprise: a thank-you luncheon for work I did Sunday at our company's emergency command center. We were met and addressed by our site's president, his boss, and the company's worldwide CEO. Unexpected, but a nice surprise nonetheless.
