The famed Dr. Gray estimated we would have 11-15 named storms this year, in forecasts from early December through the end of May. I'm sure we'll see that number bumped higher in his August update, since we've already had seven and we're not even a full third of the way through this year's season. All this has caused me to ponder:
What happens if they run out of storm names?
The formal list goes up through "W" (Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katrina, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince, Wilma), but, according to the World Meteorological Organization, "The Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, etc.) will be used to name additional cyclones." (In a PDF document here.)
And now you know.
Update: If I'd just waited a day more, the local paper would have explained it to me.
Ahh, and no Jorge :-) that's because I'm using my inside voice now a days, LOL.
