...And How Can You Not Love The Steel-Blue Uniforms?

I am (perhaps stereotypically) so NOT into sports. Generally, I can't tell you whether it's baseball season, basketball season, football season, or whatever other season there might be? (Is there even a fourth major sports season??) I'm dreading the next couple of weeks of Olympic overcoverage. And all the tight ends in the world don't draw me into pro sports.

But I'm actually looking forward to the Super Bowl.

Now, forced to choose, I'd root for whomever is playing against the Steelers no matter what. I hate teams that win too often. That doesn't matter this year: My Seattle Seahawks are in the game.

The only pro-football team in the Northwest, they're as hometown as Oregonians get. (We only had the Portland Trailblazers in basketball — also owned by Microsoftie Paul Allen — and no other big-league teams.) I remember the brouhaha when the Mariners threatened to leave Seattle over a scheduling conflict at the now-gone Kingdome — and almost everyone saying, "good riddance."

Now, the Kingdome is dust — literally — replaced by two open-air fields (one with a retractable roof) across S Royal Brougham Way from each other, mere blocks from the waterfront and the Washington State Ferries docks. (In fact, the stadiums are roughly halfway between the first Starbucks and their corporate headquarters.) And they've chosen blue and green — my two favorite colors — as the team standards. What's not to love?

Now, I figure the 'Hawks have a snowball's chance of winning. They've never, EVER made it this far in a season. But I love the underdog, and I love Seattle, so I can actually say (and mean it): Go Seahawks!

(Of course, we're still celebrating with a gay sensibility: we're going to a Super Bowl Martini Party.)

  1. You are SO RIGHT - anyone but Pittsburgh - they have their logo on only one side of their helmet - what is up with that shit... and Seattle does have the coolest logo in the league - although I liked the old colors and logo better... but again - ANYONE BUT PITTSBURGH... from an avid Raider fan...

  3. Spider - yeah, the bridge shot is what I planned my "standard" home-page photo to be... I've just been lazy and not put it back up since last year sometime.

It's the Yaquina Bay Bridge, taken from the harbor of Newport, Oregon.
